The effect of textual enhancement on the learning of Phrasal verbs

To fulfill the purpose of the present quasi-experimental study 120 female students of grade 11 from a high school in Shiraz were selected. This high school was selected as the context of the experiment because of its cooperative authorities and being populous. But one hundred and fifty students took part in the proficiency test out of the 120 students were chosen as the participants of the study but The participants were aged 17-18. Grade 11 was selected because of their general knowledge of the phrasal verbs, their populous classes (each class approximately 30 students), their homogeneity in general English knowledge, and more free time in their school schedule.
The materials of this study were
a proficiency test, a pretest, an immediate posttest, a delayed It, and seven reading texts. The proficiency test was a version of the Preliminary English Test that included general English questions to test learners’ general English knowledge and their homogeneity . The texts were taken from the first book of ‘Can you believe it’ written by Jann Huizenga (1950).
Developing test
The texts were developed in four versions based on the four conditions of the study: Three of them were enhanced in boldface, highlight, and boldface and highlight simultaneously and the last one was unenhanced but The texts were presented to three experimental groups and a control group.The pretest included some multiple-choice recognition items on the phrasal verbs and The total number of questions was 20.and Immediate posttest included 20 multiple choice recognition questions. It had been piloted a week before beginning the treatment. The reliability index of this test was 0.85. but Two weeks after It, the delayed It was administered which included 20 multiple choice recognition items. The reliability of the delayed post-test was 0.79.
Results
Reliability of the Pretest, the Immediate Posttest, and the Delayed Posttest
Reliability of the Pretest, the Immediate Posttest, and the Delayed Posttest: The reliability of the pretest, immediate posttest, and delayed posttest was calculated using reliability statistics of SPSS version ۲۲. The reports of Cronbach’s Alpha indicated 0.72 for pretest, 0.85 for the immediate posttest, and 0.79 for the delayed posttest.
